Cemetery Guide

Cemetery Compliance Guide

Cemetery Regulations

New Jersey cemetery regulations differ by facility, section, and denomination. Upright monument height limits range from 24 inches in restricted sections to 48 inches in traditional ones. Setback distances from lot lines typically run 6 to 12 inches. Permitted materials, approved finishes, and imagery restrictions vary further. NJ Monument Company contacts the cemetery at the start of every project to confirm the current rules for the specific lot, then designs the monument within those parameters. The family sees a compliant design drawing before any granite is ordered.

Foundation Requirements

Monument foundations in New Jersey must reach the frost line — 36 to 42 inches below grade — to prevent the heaving and tilting that improperly installed monuments develop within a few years. NJ Monument Company's installation crew, not subcontractors, prepares each foundation to the depth and method required by the specific cemetery: poured concrete footings, prepared beds, or granite sub-base installations. Every monument is checked for level and plumb before the crew leaves the cemetery.

Religious Cemetery Considerations

Religious cemeteries in New Jersey maintain denomination-specific design guidelines that go beyond general height and setback rules. Catholic cemeteries in Morris and Essex counties typically require a cross or religious symbol on the monument. Jewish cemeteries in Bergen and Passaic counties often restrict figural imagery while welcoming Hebrew inscriptions and traditional Jewish symbols. Some Orthodox sections require flat markers only. NJ Monument Company's design team confirms and incorporates all religious guidelines before producing the design drawing.

Monument Company

As a full-service NJ monument company, NJ Monument Company offers the complete monument line. Upright monuments — the traditional die-base-cap form — stand 20 to 36 inches on the die and carry inscriptions, portraits, and sculptural elements with the proportions that give the finished piece its presence in a cemetery setting. Slant monuments provide the same design capacity at a lower profile, appropriate for sections with height limits throughout Morris and Bergen counties. Flat monuments lie at or near grade — the required form in many of New Jersey's park-style sections — and carry full inscriptions and custom motifs without any above-grade projection. Bench monuments and mausoleum components complete the range. Every piece is hand-carved from American-made granite in our Morris County, NJ workshop by artisans whose work will remain legible and distinctive for generations.

Granite Options

Granite color selection is among the most personal choices in monument design. NJ Monument Company offers four options that cover the preferences of most New Jersey families. Barre Gray, the Vermont silver-gray granite, is the traditional NJ choice: steady, composed, and enduring. India Red brings warmth and distinction, particularly effective on companion monuments where two inscribed panels share the stone. Mahogany granite, deep burgundy patterned with black, creates a quiet but unmistakable presence in any cemetery setting. Black Galaxy, with gold mineral flecks that catch sunlight, makes hand-carved lettering vivid against the polished background.

Custom Design Process

NJ Monument Company's monument design process starts with listening. Our designers ask about the person being honored, the cemetery's regulations, and the family's wishes before making any suggestions. A scaled drawing is produced showing exact proportions, inscription layout, and any decorative or sculptural elements; the family reviews and signs off before any granite is ordered. Hand-carving, polishing, and assembly follow at our Morris County workshop. Installation — foundation preparation and monument placement — is handled by our own crew. The family receives notification when the monument is set.

Our Process

Our Hand-Carving Process

NJ Monument Company's NJ monument company process follows six defined steps. Step one: consultation — we meet with the family, confirm the cemetery's regulations, and listen to what the monument should express. Step two: scaled design drawing — a precise illustration of the monument is produced and reviewed with the family; written approval is required before fabrication begins. Step three: granite selection — the chosen slab is inspected at our Morris County, NJ workshop for density, color uniformity, and structural integrity. Step four: hand-carving — artisans incise inscriptions and relief work using chisels and pneumatic tools, finishing each letter and motif individually for lasting definition. Step five: polishing and assembly — the monument faces are brought to a mirror finish, carved surfaces are sandblasted to matte contrast, and the die, base, and cap are assembled and inspected. Step six: installation — our crew prepares the foundation, levels the base, places the monument, and confirms compliance before leaving the site.

What Families Say

New Jersey families have entrusted us with their memorials for three generations.

“NJ Monument Company has been our family's monument company for two generations. When we needed a monument for my father, we went back to the same workshop that had served us twenty years earlier. The quality and the care were exactly what we remembered, and the staff spoke to us in Polish, which meant everything to my mother.” — Anna, Passaic County NJ
